National Curriculum Purpose of study

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.



At Highfields Primary School, scientific enquiry is at the core of all scientific learning. We aim to inspire our children by giving them opportunities to peruse their natural curiosity; allowing them to explore a rich learning environment, providing them with a range of scientific resources; developing their investigative skills in and out of the classroom in a range of contexts and assisting them in developing an appreciation of the nature of science.

We encourage our children to ask questions, make observations, take risks and we listen to their ideas, using these as the foundations for their learning, to ensure that they can continually evolve their knowledge and understanding of the ever-changing world around them.

Some of our science lessons are incorporated within our Contexts for Learning, this enables the children to make connections between ideas and to promote an understanding of how they are developed and applied beyond the classroom.
